| About Cougar Basketball

On paper, the 1998-99 season looks promising for Azusa Pacific women's basketball. Besides returning 2 All-GSAC performers and 2 of her top 3 scorers from a year ago, sixth-year head coach Danielle Jorgenson has landed 3 top high school guards in Southern California, and has lured a 6-foot-3 center back to her hometown from an NCAA Div. I program. However, as Cougar fans and Jorgenson clearly remember, success was also forecast for a year ago, but the Cougars ended with a mediocre 17-14 season, including a disappointing 4-8 mark in conference play. If the Cougars are to turn the tide and rebound from a year ago, Jorgenson adamantly declares a priority for depth and team consistency all over the floor.
Injuries whittled down the Cougar bench last year and exhaustion took its toll. If Azusa Pacific was going to survive a 30-plus game schedule, Jorgenson knew she needed to stock the bench, especially with guards. The Cougars boast 8 guards this season, all of which can run the break and shoot the ball. Jorgenson also knew her post play had to step up and be more physical. She bolstered her frontcourt with the addition of a 6-foot-3 center and now has 3 players over 6-foot-1 in the paint, a first in program history. Lastly, Jorgenson wants better offensive execution. Every person has to contribute by wanting the ball and moving better on the floor, with and without the ball, to enable the offense to put points on the board.
