The winningest program in Golden State Athletic Conference history, Azusa Pacific softball has become one of the premier small college softball programs in the nation. With 4 GSAC titles, 11 trips to the NAIA regional playoffs in the past 13 years and 2 trips to the NAIA National Softball Tournament, few programs can match what Cougar softball has accomplished.
Now in her fifth season, Cougar Head Coach Sharon Lehman has guided Azusa Pacific to 4 straight seasons of at least 34 wins, including a 2-year stretch (1996-97) in which the Cougars posted an impressive 98-25 record. In 1996, Azusa Pacific won 18 GSAC games, a conference record, and were ranked No. 10 in the NAIA before finishing fifth at the NAIA National Tournament. In the 1997 campaign, the team dubbed by many as the greatest team in Azusa Pacific, won a school-best 51 games, finishing fifth in the NAIA rankings and at the NAIA National Tournament.
Azusa Pacific typically plays a 50-60 game schedule, including 20 conference games. Playing some of the top programs in the NAIA, Azusa Pacific also opposes several NCAA Div. II and III powers, while competing against NCAA Div. I teams as well. Athletic scholarships help build the typical 15-member roster.
The Cougars play home games at Jonathan DeYoung Field in West Covina in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Doubleheaders mark the schedule when the Cougars play with distinct starting times in the afternoon to coincide with the Southern California weather.
