 About the Cougars

Azusa Pacific sponsors 14 intercollegiate sports (7 men's and 7 women's), all affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the nation's oldest collegiate athletic association. Thirteen programs compete within the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) while football is an NAIA independent. Over the past 20 years, Azusa Pacific has emerged as one of the nation's premier small-college athletic programs, garnering 15 NAIA national championships since 1980. In the prestigous Sears Directors' Cup, which measures an athletic program's overall success, Azusa Pacific has been among the NAIA's top 8 every year, and finished as high as No. 3 in 1997. In 1994, the NAIA recognized the Cougar men's athletic program as the finest in the nation.

The GSAC was established in 1986 by like-minded Christian college institutions, purposely aligned to be similar in enrollment, academics, athletics, scholarship and student life. Current members are Azusa Pacific University, Biola University, California Baptist University, Christian Heritage College, Concordia University, Fresno Pacific University, Hope International University, Point Loma Nazarene University, Vanguard University, (formerly Southern California College) and Westmont College. GSAC teams have won 16 national championships and individual athletes from all 8 schools have won individual NAIA titles.
