| COUGARS HIT THE ROAD, THEN HIT POMONA-PITZER FOR AN 8-6 WIN
CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific took to the road for the first time in 1998 and came away with an 8-6 win over NCAA Division III affiliated Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. For the second straight game the Cougars banged out 12 hits. Junior OF Karl Castro (Glendale, Calif./Burroughs HS) went 3-for-5 at the plate and hit his second home run in as many games to pace the Cougars. Azusa Pacific scored 5 runs in the first inning before Pomona-Pitzer rallied to within 5-4 after 2 innings of play. However, senior Brian Baker (Bellflower, Calif./Cerritos HS) came out of the bullpen to shut down the Sagehens with 3 innings of effective relieve. In the process, Baker picked up the win. Senior Chad Arko (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale HS), who a year ago recorded a school record 9 saves, picked up his first of the new season, striking out 4 Sagehens in less than 2 innings of work. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, but was postponed because of heavy morning rains. With the win the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the season while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 0-1. |
