AZUSA, CALIF. -- Although it was St. Patrick's Day, Azusa Pacific did not need luck, just a solid all-around performance, as they easily defeated Husson College (Maine) 20-0 in a nonconference game to remain unbeaten at home in 13 games.
The Cougars set the tone from the beginning, jumping on the visiting Braves for 12 runs and 13 hits in the first 2 innings. In the first inning alone, the Cougars collected five doubles, and sophomore rightfielder Erik Sampson hit a 2-run HR, his 2nd of the season.
Junior pitcher Brian Nichols, making his first start of the season, retired 6 of 7 Braves in the first and second innings to help keep the Cougars at the plate.
The second inning provided more of the same, as the Cougars scored all 6 runs with one out, led by junior centerfielder Brian Griffin's 2-run double. Sampson kept the rally going with his 2nd hit in as many innings, this time a double. Griffin finished 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 3 RBI's, while Sampson ended up going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs.
Every Azusa Pacific starter had collected at least one hit after 2 innings, and all 15 Cougar batters reached base safely in the game.
While the Cougars' bats banged out hit after hit, the combined 2-hit performance of 6 Cougar pitchers effectively kept the game out of reach. Nichols picked up the win, and the Cougars rotated 5 pitchers in for one inning apiece to finish the game. Each Cougar pitcher recorded a strikeout.
Senior first baseman John Knott extended his hitting streak to 15 games, hitting 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs.
Senior infielder Grady Sain's 2-run HR highlighted a 4 run fourth inning for the Cougars. Sain reached base safely in all 5 plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI's, 2 runs, and a double to go with his 3rd HR of the year.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 19-5-1 overall, while their GSAC record stands at 11-3.
