azusa pacific sweeps concordia, 31-7, 8-2

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The Azusa Pacific bats put together a record-setting day in the process of sweeping Concordia University, 31-7 and 8-2, in a GSAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, the Cougars scored a school-record 31 runs, breaking the former standard of 29 set against USIU in 1975. Azusa Pacific scored in every inning except the third and every Cougar but one got at least 1 hit. Junior designated hitter Larry Long cranked a 3-run homer and Chris Ewing added a solo shot all in the second inning to propel Azusa Pacific to a 9-1 lead after 2 inning. The hit parade continued throughout the game with Azusa Pacific collecting 26 safeties. Junior second baseman Josh Olson was 3-for-3 with a school-record 6 runs scored, breaking the former record of 5 held by 8 former Cougars. Ewing finished the game 3-for-4. Senior first baseman John Knott was 4-for-7 with 4 runs and 3 RBIs while junior center fielder Brian Griffin was 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs.

In the nightcap, Concordia ace Matt Broesmle slowed the Azusa Pacific bats for 4 innings. However, in the fifth, Knott connected on his first of 2 home runs, a 2-run shot that gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Knott then slugged another round-tripper in the sixth, his fifth of the season. It was a 3-run shot that gave the Cougars a comfortable 8-2 lead.

Senior pitcher Fritz Maskrey, who entered the game with an 0-1 record and a 12.48 earned run average in 3 previous starts, put together his finest outing of the season, pitching all 7 innings of the nightcap while striking out 7.

Knott finished the day 6-for-8 at the plate with 8 RBIs, 6 runs, 2 home runs and a double.

With the 2 victories, Azusa Pacific improves to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the GSAC.
