COUGARS START 1998 OFF WITH RARE HOME LOSS

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Fresh off a season in which they won a school record 23 games, the Azusa Pacific Men's Volleyball team started their 1998 campaign off tonight against Cal Tech.

However, the Cougars, strangers to losing last season, were defeated at home, 3-1 by the Beavers. It was only the Cougars sixth loss at home in five seasons.

"We just didn't have the chemistry tonight. It's kind of rough trying to mix new players in with the season so young," said second year coach Brandon Huffman.

Game one was all Cal Tech as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead, and never looke back. The second game, the Cougars still couldn't find the chemistry, and they lost 15-5.

Game three, the Cougars took control early, and won 15-10. But game four was again all Cal Tech, as they took it 15-6.

"Without making excuses, it was our first match of the season, and they (Cal Tech) had played a few, but still, we had our moments we could have capitalized and we didn't. Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow night," said Huffman.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, February 9, when they travel to take on Pacific Christian College in a match at Cal State Fullerton. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
