THIS WEEK: Azusa Pacific, riding high among the leaders of the GSAC, can finally settle into a routine week of play after 4 weeks of tap-dancing with an El Nino-plagued schedule. No make-ups and no potential rain-outs on the slate this week. Just GSAC baseball – 3 games to be precise. Azusa Pacific hosts defending conference champ Cal Baptist on Tuesday (March 10) in a 5 p.m. single game. The Cougar return to the diamond on Saturday (March 14) when they host Westmont in a 1 p.m. GSAC doubleheader.

SERIES NOTES: Azusa Pacific leads the all-time with Cal Baptist, 73-27, after posting a 10-2victory over the Lancers on Feb. 26. Though the Cougars have dominated the 32-year series, it’s the Lancers who have enjoyed the most success in recent years, winning 7 of the past 12 meetings. Azusa Pacific is 37-11 vs. CBC in Azusa.
Azusa Pacific leads the Westmont series, 67-47. The Cougar have won 12 of the past 15 meetings with the Warriors and are 35-19 all-time vs. Westmont in the Canyon City.
LAST WEEK: Azusa Pacific won 3 of 4 games last week to stay among the GSAC leaders in the early-going of the season. The Cougars knocked off Chapman, 9-7, in a nonconference game in Orange on Tuesday. Junior shortstop Matt Lewallen and junior catcher Carlos de la Trinidad hit back-to-back home runs to key a 3-run second inning. The following day, the Cougars dropped a 9-7 GSAC decision to Southern Cal College in Azusa. Three days later, though, the Cougars paid back the visit and swept a doubleheader from SCC in Costa Mesa, beating the Vanguards 4-3 in 10 innings and then 12-2 in the nightcap.

NO PLACE LIKE . . . THE ROAD: Forget home cooking, the Cougars love to eat out. Azusa Pacific is 8-1-1 on the road this season, which includes a pair of GSAC doubleheader sweeps (at Point Loma and at Southern Cal College). The Cougars lone road loss was a 4-2, 11-inning decision at Biola. Since that Feb. 17 setback, Azusa Pacific has won 5 straight on the road.
