General Biology Laboratory
BIOL 111
It is not our purpose to see how fast we can get out of lab. This
time is an adjunct to the lecture and should be conscientiously used
for study and review of lecture and related principles. The lab also
offers an opportunity for investigation and experimentation as well
as practicing basic scientific techniques. All of these emphases
help the student learn the subject matter.
1. Know the location of saety devices (fire extinguisher, first aid kit, safety glasses, emergency exits).
2. No smoking in the lab. No eating/drinking (in lab you may be ingesting more than you bargained for!).
3. No "horseplay" in lab. Be courteous and follow the "Golden Rule".
4. Dissection Kits - These are not provided. We suggest that you use the kit you purchased. Always replace other lab items on the side counter; others will use them the same week. Always replace microscope in proper storage area and place chairs under the desk when you leave.
5. Preparation and alertness - Know the correct way to use chemicals and equipment BEFORE using them. You should have read over lab before entering laboratory!
6. Keep the working area as clean and uncluttered as possible. Make sure area is clean and equipment is left in the proper condition at the completion of the lab period. Tidiness when you leave is not quite equal to "Godliness" but very close!
7. Be alert to personal safety, i.e., wash hands after lab, wear appropriate protective clothing, don't pick up broken glass with your hands, confine long hair and loose clothing. Observe proper disposal procedures.
8. When possible, work with a partner.
9. NOTE: Improper storage of microscope, failure to clean lab station, distracting lab behavior, or lab absences will result in points being deducted from the subjective category.
10. Ask for help when uncertain, and ENJOY LAB.
**NOTE: The Lab Practical must be taken during the lab session for which you are registered!!!
